Truffle Dog Training Beginner Workshop

Wed 19 Aug 2026 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM GU31

A 90-minute introduction to truffle dog training — for curious handlers and their dogs.

Ever wondered whether your dog could learn to find truffles?

This relaxed, hands-on workshop is the easiest way to find out. In 90 minutes you and your dog will get a proper taste of what truffle dog training actually involves — without the commitment of a full course or a full day.

We'll start with a friendly welcome and a light introduction to the world of truffle hunting: how truffle dogs work, what makes a good one, and how scent training begins. You'll then watch a short demonstration before getting your own dog working on a simple introductory scent exercise — designed to suit dogs of any breed, age, or experience level.

It's friendly, practical, and genuinely fun. No previous training experience needed. No pressure. Just a chance to see what your dog is capable of and to find out whether truffle hunting is something you'd like to take further.

What's included

  • A light introduction to truffle hunting and how truffle dogs work
  • A short demonstration of foundation scent work
  • Hands-on practical work with your own dog
  • Individual feedback and guidance from Ben
  • A clear sense of what next steps might look like if you're keen to continue

Who it's for

Anyone curious about truffle dog training. You don't need a particular breed, your dog doesn't need to be a young puppy, and you don't need any prior scent work experience.

If your dog is on the more reactive or anxious side, please drop Ben a message before booking. Our small group format (max 8 dogs) means we can usually accommodate sensitive dogs with sensible distance and management — but a quick chat first means we can make sure the day works for you both.

Under-16s

Welcome to take part, but must be accompanied by a paying adult on the day.

Spectators

Each paying handler may bring one accompanying spectator for a discounted £15 ticket. Spectators are welcome to watch but won't be working a dog themselves.

Numbers

Strictly limited to 8 dog-and-handler teams per workshop. Small numbers mean every team gets proper individual attention.

Date & Time

Wednesday 19th August 2026 Arrival from 6:00pm for a 6:30pm sharp start. Workshop ends at approximately 8pm.

Location

The workshop is held in a field at a private location close to the South Downs, on the West Sussex / East Hampshire border. The exact address, postcode, and parking instructions will be sent to all booked attendees by email after purchase/before the event.

What to bring

  • Your dog
  • A well-fitting harness or collar, and a standard lead (no extending leads please)
  • Plenty of high-value treats your dog loves (toys welcome also)
  • Water and a bowl for your dog
  • Weather-appropriate clothing and footwear — it takes place in a field outdoors

Weather

We run rain or shine. Bring waterproofs and an umbrella if the forecast looks wet — there will usually be a gazebo on site for shelter during chats and breaks (but not guaranteed). The only thing that will stop us is typically going to be a formal weather warning, in which case we'll reschedule and contact everyone directly.

Female dogs in season

If your dog comes into season around the workshop date, please let us know as soon as you can. We'll happily transfer your ticket to a future Workshop — common sense and good communication keep it simple for everyone.

Bookings, cancellations & terms

Full booking terms, including our cancellation and transfer policy, can be found at truffleforager.com/terms.

Pricing

  • Handler ticket: £35
  • Spectator ticket: £15 (limited to one per paying handler)

How this differs from a Truffle Dog Discovery Day

This is the bite-sized version. Our Truffle Dog Discovery Days are full-day immersive events with multiple practical exercises, in-depth theory talks, and a delicious truffle lunch. The Beginner Workshop is 90 focused minutes designed to give you a feel for the practice without a full day's commitment.

If you enjoy the Beginner Workshop, the Discovery Day or Foundation Course is the natural next step.
